An open love letter

An open love letter….
When I say “I love you”,I don’t mean ‘ I am unreservedly devoting the rest of my life to you to the exclusion of all others, and to the extent that you are more important than me, and that to do so in that way could potentially make me unhappy’ .

I don’t mean that because it’s possible I could fail, and I have done – a few times.

When I say “I love you”, I mean I love you because you are like me. I love you because you are human. I love you because you are sharing this time – you are sharing my time of life. I love you because, despite all the hardships of life, all the sadness, all the pain, all the disappointments, you carry on. You carry on trying, you carry on with a smile and you carry on loving. You take the next breath.

So when I smile at a stranger on a passing bus, or wave to strangers from the train, or say hello to a small boy or girl in the street, I am saying “I love you”, and it;s exactly the same thing.

I say “I love you” to many people, but I might not use those words, I might say it with something I do, I might say it with something I don’t do. Some people will never know I love them. Some people will always know.

So when I say “I love you”, I am saying “I love you for now, for being like me.” … and I’m also saying “I will love you forever”

Your loving friend,
Richard Crookes
